Medications & Doulas
If I am planning on using pain medication should I hire a doula?
A mother may choose to have both a Doula and medications. Certain medications can make discomfort easier; others may take the discomfort away. Worries, questions and concerns about labor and birth may still exist and these can be shared with the Doula who stays with the laboring mother. Having a doula present can help you make educated and conscious decisions. She can help you relax, and encourage you to continue being an active participant in your labor. Sometimes, when a lot of interventions are involved, it can make the laboring woman feel powerless. Feeling empowered by your labor, no matter whether you have a natural childbirth experience, use medications, other interventions, or a c-section, is very important in your experience of becoming a parent. The Doula is there to help you achieve as many of your birth goals as possible and to find ways to manage the discomfort until you are able to receive medication. .
